Smith to run for District 4 seat being vacated by Ben Ivey

USC Union Marketing and Development Director Annie Smith has announced she will run for Union County Council District 4. The seat is currently held by Ben Ivey, who recently announced he will not run for reelection to that seat but will instead run for Union County Supervisor. Her full statement can be found on our WBCU Facebook page. In it, she says that every district needs a strong voice, and she wants to be that for District 4. Smith was born and raised in Union County. Her mother, Olivia Smith, retired after teaching for over 30 years in Union County Schools. Her father, the late Monty Smith, managed Harry From’s and Graham Cash for many years.

Smith received her Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication from Lander University and a Master’s in Business Administration from USC Aiken. She has sat on boards for the Union Rotary Club, Union County Planning Commission, Ten at the Top, Union County Partners Board, and the Union County YMCA. She has been at her job at USC Union since 2012, where she says she has been a strong voice for the campus and assisted with the significant economic growth and sustainable revitalization the campus has brought to downtown Union and the Town of Jonesville. Through strong partnerships with the county and city, the campus acquired and renovated empty buildings on Main Street for Science & Nursing, Nursing Simulation Labs, Campus Bookstore, and Student Services. The athletic department has reconditioned City Park, restored the Jonesville football field and an industrial league ball field, and renovated the vacant Jonesville gym for an indoor athletic training facility.

Smith says as a member of Union County Council, she would work with town councils, businesses, and others in the private sector to bring this type of growth to other communities that have not seen that type of growth, like Lockhart and Carlisle.

The filing period for Union County Council opens March 16 and runs through March 30. County Council is a partisan office. In her statement, Smith did not indicate for which party she will be running.
