Sports 10-27-21

Weather has moved a number of local games set for tomorrow to today. Union County JV football will now play at Emerald at 7 p.m. Sims Middle School football will host Woodruff for their final game of the year today at 5 p.m. Jonesville Middle School football is still set to play tomorrow against Chesnee.

Union County High School Varsity volleyball strong season came to a close last night. The team fell to West-Oak in the 2nd round of the 3A playoffs.

The Atlanta Braves defeated the Houston Astros in game one of the World Series last night, 6-2. Atlanta jumped out early as Jorge Soler had a led off homer to get the game started. Adam Duvall added to the lead in the 3rd off a 2-run homer. Houston finally got on the board in the 4th, but Atlanta pitching kept the Astros in check the rest of the night. A.J. Minter was the winning pitcher for the Braves. Framber Valdez was credited with the loss. The series will continue today with game two. First pitch is at 8:09 p.m. Max Fried will get the start for Atlanta. Jose Urquidy will take the mound for Houston. We will have the game here on WBCU with pregame starting 7 p.m. The game can also be found on Fox.

While the Brave did get the win last night, they did lose one of their key players. Pitcher Charlie Morton, who got the start on the mound, left the game in the 3rd after being hit by a ground ball hit his right ankle. It was later announced that Morton has a right fibula fracture and will miss the World series.

Union County Varsity Volleyball will host the second round of the 3A playoffs today. The Lady Jackets will take on West-Oak at 6 p.m. at Union County High School.

Last week both Sims Middle School and Jonesville Middle School football lost. Sims fell to Chapman, 46-20. The Tigers trailed at halftime, 28-12, before Chapman added to their lead in the 4th quarters. Sims, 0-6 on the year and 0-4 in conference play, will host Woodruff this Thursday for their final game of the year. Jonesville lost in overtime to Blacksburg, 24-16. The Wildcats will travel to Chesnee on Thursday.

South Carolina football announced last night that starting quarterback Zeb Noland will have a minor surgical procedure today for a meniscus tear in his right knee. Noland is expected to be available when South Carolina returns to action November 6th when they host Florida. It was also announced yesterday that defensive back Jaylan Foster is one of the 12 semifinalists for the Jim Thorpe Award. This award is given to the country’s best defensive back. Foster has 66 tackles, 2 sacks, and 5 intersections so far this year for the Gamecocks.

The ACC announced yesterday that Clemson linebacker James Skalski was named ACC Co-Linebacker of the week after Clemson’s loss to Pittsburgh this past Saturday. Skalski had a career-high 18 tackles against Pittsburgh.

The new college football AP poll for this week has undefeated Georgia still on top. Cincinnati, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Ohio St. round out the top five. Coastal Carolina, the only instate school in the top 25, fell 10 spots to 24th after their first loss of the year to Appalachian State last week.

Union County High School varsity football fell on Friday night to Chapman in overtime, 38-35. The Yellow Jackets lead at halftime, 21-14. Chapman scored with 1:26 left in regulation to send the game to overtime. Union County missed a field goal in OT while Chapman was able score when they received the ball. Union County (0-7) will finish out the season on Friday when they host Emerald.

Both Clemson and South Carolina lost on the road this weekend. The Tigers fell at #23 Pittsburgh, 27-17. Clemson, now 4-3 on the season and 3-2 in ACC play, will host Florida St. this Saturday. South Carolina fell at #17 Texas A&M, 44-14. The Gamecocks, now 4-4 on the year and 1-4 in SEC play, will have this week off before hosting Florida on November 6th.

The Atlanta Braves defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers Saturday night in game six of the NLCS to advance to the World Series, 4-2. The game was tied at 1 apiece going into the bottom of the 4th when Eddie Rosario hit a 3-run homer for Atlanta. The Dodgers added one more run in the 7th but it was not enough as they were eliminated. Atlanta will be in the World Series for the first time since 1999. They will face the Houston Astros. Houston defeated the Boston Red Sox on Friday to punch their ticket to the fall classic. First pitch of game one of the world series is set for tomorrow at 8:09 p.m. in Houston.

Kyle Larson won his second straight race yesterday at Kansas Speedway. Chase Elliott was second. Kevin Harvick, Kurt Busch, and Denny Hamlin round out the top five. With just two races left in the season, the teams travel to Martinsville Saturday night.

The Atlanta Braves fell last night to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 11-2. Atlanta got on the board first, but the Dodgers ran past Atlanta with 5 homeruns including 3 from Chris Taylor. The Braves still lead the series 3 to 2 as the series moves back to Atlanta this weekend. Game 6 of the series is tomorrow night at 8:08 p.m. If the Dodgers win tomorrow night, game 7 of the series will be held Sunday at 7:37 p.m.

The Houston Astros have a chance to punch their ticket to the world series tonight. Houston has a 3-2 over the Boston Red Sox as they play game 6 of their series tonight. First pitch is at 8:08 p.m.

Clemson football had two players named to the ESPN midseason freshman All-American team yesterday. Offensive guard Marcus Tate and Safety Andrew Mukuba were both named to the team. Tate has started 3 of the 6 games this season for the Tigers while Mukuba leads the Clemson defense with five pass breakups. He also has 28 tackles on the season so far, which is third best of any Clemson defensive player. The Tigers return to action Saturday at #23 Pittsburgh.

A major upset last night in the world of college football involving a instate team. #14 Coastal Carolina lost their first game of the season to Appalachian State, 30-27.

Freddie Freeman then homered for Atlanta in the 3rd, adding to the Braves lead. Los Angeles finally got on the board in the 5th, but Atlanta added more runs in the top of the 9th off a 3-run homer from Rosario. Both teams return to action tonight with Atlanta having a chance to head to the world series with a win. First pitch tonight is set for 8:08 p.m. We will have the game here on WBCU with pregame set for 8 p.m.

Last night the Houston Astros defeated the Boston Red Sox in game five of the ALCS, 9-1. Houston now leads the series, 3-2. Game six is set for Friday night at 8:08 p.m. as the series returns to Houston.

Union County Varsity Volleyball fell last night to Chapman in a tiebreaker game for the region title. The Lady Yellow Jackets still finished second in the region and will host a first round volleyball match on Thursday at Union County High School. The opponent and time of the match will be announced later.

Union County Girls Tennis will also be starting the playoffs on Thursday. The Lady Jackets will travel to Powdersville on Thursday.

It was announced yesterday by South Carolina head football coach Shane Beamer that quarterback Luke Doty will miss the rest of the season and have foot surgery. Doty missed the first two games of the season after injuring his foot in the preseason. Doty then aggravated it in the second quarter of this past weekend’s game against Vanderbilt. Zeb Noland will take over for Doty this weekend when the Gamecocks take on Texas A&M.

The preseason AP top 25 Women’s basketball poll was released yesterday with the South Carolina Lady Gamecocks coming out on top. South Carolina received 14 out of the 29 first-place votes. Head Coach Dawn Staley, who sign a new seven-year contract valued at $22.4 million last week, and the Lady Gamecocks will open the season on the road November 9th at N.C. State.

The Atlanta Braves dropped game three of the NLCS last night to the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-5. LA jumped out early to the lead as Corey Seager had a two-run homer in the 1st. Atlanta took the lead in the 4th, but Cody Bellinger tied the game at 5 apiece with a 3-run homer in the 8th. Mookie Betts then gave the Dodgers the lead off an RBI double a couple of plays later. Atlanta still leads the 2-1. Both teams return to action tonight First pitch tonight is set for 8:08 p.m. Huascar Ynoa will take the mound for Atlanta. Union County Varsity Volleyball defeated Chapman last night. The Lady Jackets and Lady Panthers are tied in the region and will play in a tiebreaker game today for the region title. The game will be held at Broome High School at 6 p.m.

 

Last week, Jonesville Middle School football loss to Chesnee, 16-0. The game was scoreless most of the first half. Chesnee scored with seconds left in the second quarter and then added to their lead in the second half. Jonesville football will travel to Blacksburg on Thursday.

 

Sims Volleyball finished their season last week. On Monday, the Lady Tigers fell to Woodruff, 3-0. They then fell to Southside Christian on Tuesday, 3-0.

South Carolina football had one player pick up SEC honors yesterday. Punter Kai Kroeger was named SEC Special Team player of the week. Kroeger had four punts for 227 yards in the win against Vanderbilt on Saturday. Three of the four punts were inside the 20 with one punt being a career long 70-yards.

The new AP college football rankings have been released. Georgia remains on top of the list. Cincinnati moves into the second spot after Iowa lost. Oklahoma, Alabama, and Ohio St. round out the top five. The only instate school on the list, Coastal Carolina, moved up one spot to 14th.

The Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers return to action tonight in game three of the NLCS. The series moves to Dodger Stadium as Atlanta has a 2-game lead of Los Angeles. First pitch tonight is set for 5:08 p.m. Charlie Morton will take the mound for Atlanta. Walker Buehler will be the starting pitcher for LA. The NBA regular season begins tonight. The season, which runs all the way until May, will open with two games tonight. The Brooklyn Nets will play last seasons champions, the Milwaukee Bucks, at 7:30 p.m. The Golden State Warriors will take on the Los Angeles Lakers at 10 p.m.

Union County High School varsity football fell to Broome on Friday night, 54-27. The Yellow Jackets tied the game in the third quarter at 27 apiece. Broome would then score 27 straight points and pick up the win. Union County, 0-6 on the season and 0-3 in region play, will host Chapman on Friday.

Clemson defeated Syracuse Friday night, 17-14. The Tigers led most of the night. Syracuse had a chance to tie the game late but missed a 48-yard field goal. Clemson, now 4-2 and 3-1 in ACC play, will travel to Pittsburgh this weekend.

South Carolina picked up a win over Vanderbilt on Saturday, 21-20. The Gamecocks jumped out to an early lead. Vanderbilt took the lead in the 3rd quarter, but South Carolina came back in the 4th.  Quarterback Zeb Noland found wide receiver Xavier Legette for the game-winning touchdown in the closing seconds. South Carolina, 4-3 on the season and 1-4 in SEC play, travel to Texas A&M this week.

Union County native Shi Smith made his first NFL regular-season start yesterday for the Carolina Panthers. Smith had 2 catches for 20 yards in the Panthers' overtime loss to the Minnesota Vikings, 34-28.

The Atlanta Braves lead the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLCS, 2-0, after back-to-back, walk-off wins.  Atlanta won Saturday night, 3-2, then last night, 5-4. The series will now move to Los Angeles on Tuesday. The Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros are currently tied at 1 game apiece in the ALCS. They return to action tonight in Boston.

Kyle Larson won the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 500 at Texas Motor Speedway yesterday. With the win, Larson will be one of the four drivers battling for the Championship at Phoenix. Larsons’ teammate William Byron finished second. The teams travel to Kansas this weekend.

Around the county in sports today, Union County High School JV football will host Broome at 6 p.m. Sims Middle School football will travel to Ewing at 6:30 p.m. Jonesville Middle School football will host Chesnee at 5 p.m. USC Union men’s soccer will host USC Salkehatchie at 3 p.m. USC Union volleyball will host Davidson-Davie CC at 6 p.m.

Both Union County High School volleyball and girls tennis picked up region wins last night over Emerald.

Ten individuals will be inducted into the University of South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame tonight. They include football standouts John Abraham, Mike Durrah, and Connor Shaw. Also being inducted tonight is men’s basketball standout Scotti Ward, women’s basketball standout Brantley Southers, baseball standout Michael Roth, track & field star Ron Willis, women’s basketball coach Nancy Wilson, volleyball coach Kim Williams, and Athletics Director Dr. Mike McGee. All inductees will also be recognized this Saturday at the South Carolina/Vanderbilt game.

The Atlanta Braves will find out which team they will be facing in the NLCS tonight. The Los Angeles Dodgers will travel to San Francisco to take on the Giants in game five of their series. The winner tonight will move on and face the Braves. First pitch tonight is at 9:07 p.m. on TBS.

Week 6 of the NFL season gets underway tonight. Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles. Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. on Fox.

Around the county in sports today, Union County varsity and JV volleyball will be at Emerald. The JV game is at 5:30 p.m., with the varsity game set to follow at 7. Union County girls tennis will be at Emerald.

Even though we are in the middle of college football season, the start of college basketball season is just around the corner. The ACC held its annual basketball tipoff event in Charlotte yesterday. Clemson coach Brad Brownell was joined by players Naz Bohannon and Hunter Tyson. Brownell talked about the growth of the Clemson program and new players that will be hitting the court this season. Brownell, who signed a two-year contract extension earlier this month, will be entering his 12th season as the head coach of the Tigers. Clemson opens up the season on November 9th when they host PC.

The Atlanta Braves will be moving on to the NLCS after defeating the Milwaukee Brewers last night, 5-4. Atlanta trailed until Eddie Rosario had a 2-RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the 4th. After tying the game again in the 5th, Freddie Freeman homered for Atlanta in the 8th as they headed to victory. Tyler Matzek was the winning pitcher for Atlanta. Josh Hader picked up the loss for Milwaukee. Will Smith picked up a save for the Braves. 

 

 

Atlanta will have to wait until Thursday night to find out who they will be playing in the NLCS. The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Francisco Giants in game four of their series last night, 7-2. The Dodgers and Giants will play game five Thursday night in San Francisco to see who will advance.

In the AL, the Houston Astros rolled past the Chicago White Sox yesterday in game four of their series, as Houston won, 10-1. The Astros will now play the Boston Red Sox in the ALCS.

Around the county in sports today, Sims volleyball will be at Woodruff.

The new AP 25 college football poll had a big shift after a number of big games this past weekend. Georgia is now ranked 1st in the poll. This is the first time since 1982 the Bulldogs are in the top spot. Iowa is ranked second after their win over Penn St. Cincinnati is ranked third, while Oklahoma is fourth. Alabama fell to 5th after their loss to Texas A&M. Coastal Carolina stayed in the 15th spot for the second straight week.

The Atlanta Braves picked up their second win in their NLDS against the Milwaukee Brewers, 3-0. Joc Pederson had a 3-run homer for Atlanta in the 5th, as Braves pitching held the Brewers to 5 hits. Ian Anderson picked up the win for Atlanta. Adrian Houser was the losing pitcher for the Brewers. Will Smith was credited with the save for Atlanta, as well. Atlanta can finish their series with the Brewers today with a win. First pitch is set for 5:07 p.m. We will have the game here on WBCU, with pregame starting at 3:50 p.m.

Woodruff took the lead in the 4th and held on to give Union County their 5th loss of the year. Union County, now 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in region play, will travel to Broome on Friday.

South Carolina fell to Tennessee this weekend, 45-20. The Gamecocks struggled early, and Tennessee jumped out to a 35-point lead midway through the 2nd quarter. South Carolina, now 3-3 on the season and 0-3 in SEC play, will return home this weekend to host Vanderbilt.

The Atlanta Braves have tied their NLDS series with the Milwaukee Brewers at one apiece. Milwaukee won the first game on Friday, 2-1. Atlanta then shut out the Brewers Saturday, 3-0. Game 3 of the series is set for today at 1:07 p.m. Ian Anderson will get the start on the mound for Atlanta. The Brewers will send Freddy Peralta to the mound. We will have the game after the noon report here on WBCU.

Kyle Larson won the Bank of America Roval 400 yesterday at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Tyler Reddick finished second. Chris Buescher, Kyle Busch, and Denny Hamlin round out the top five. The Cup series travels to Texas Motor Speedway this weekend.

Sims football has moved their game for today against Lewisville due to weather. Sims volleyball lost last night to Landrum, 3-0. The Lady Tigers dropped the first set, 25-16. They then dropped the second and third sets, 25-21 and 25-15. They will play Rainbow Lake Middle School today.

Week 6 of the college football season will get underway tonight. One in-state school will hit the field this evening. #15 Coastal Carolina will travel to Arkansas to face Arkansas St. at 7:30 p.m. Another college game in action tonight is Houston traveling to Tulane, also at 7:30 p.m. NFL week 5 will also get underway tonight. The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals last night in the NL Wild Card game, 3-1. The Dodgers will move on to face the San Francisco Giants on Friday. Sims volleyball lost to Ewing yesterday, 3-1. They will return to action today as they host Landrum. They announced yesterday they have added games to their schedule. The Lady Tigers will now travel to Rainbow Lake on Thursday. Next week they will play at SEC on Monday and play at Woodruff on Tuesday. The Semifinals for the region will then begin on Wednesday.

South Carolina football will be without a veteran WR the rest of the year. The Gamecocks announced that OrTre Smith will be entering the transfer portal. Smith, a graduate of Wando High School, had 43 career catches for 435 yards during his time at South Carolina. He only had 1 catch so far this season for 15 yards.

The Boston Red Sox defeated the New York Yankees last night in the AL wild card game, 6-2. The Red Sox will now move on to face another division rival, the Tampa Bay Rays, on Thursday. The NL Wild Card will be held tonight. The St. Louis Cardinals will host the Los Angeles Dodgers this evening. The winner will move on to face San Francisco Giants on Friday. The Clemson Tigers fell out of the AP Top 25 poll after their win over Boston College this past weekend. This was the first time since November 2014 that the Tigers are not in the poll. Clemson also found out yesterday they will be without freshman Will Taylor. Taylor suffered a torn ACL early in the game this past Saturday. One in-state school did move up a spot in the AP poll. Coastal Carolina went up one spot to #15 after their win over LA Monroe. Alabama and Georgia remain the top 2 schools in the poll. Iowa, Penn St., and Cincinnati now make up the rest of the top five.

The MLB playoffs begin today. The AL Wild Card game is set for tonight. The New York Yankees will travel to Fenway Park to take on their rivals, the Boston Red Sox. First pitch is set for 8:08 on ESPN. The winner of tonight’s game will travel to Tampa to face the Rays on Thursday.

Bubba Wallace won the YellaWood 500 yesterday from Talladega Superspeedway, claiming his first Cup Series win. It was also the first win for his team, 23XI Racing. The race was called just past halfway after rain moved into the area. Brad Keselowski finished second. Joey Logano, Kurt Busch, and Christopher Bell round out the top five. Both South Carolina and #25 Clemson picked up wins this weekend. South Carolina defeated Troy, 23-14. QB Luke Doty threw for 255 yards and 1 TD as the Gamecock defense forced 4 turnovers. South Carolina, now 3-2, will travel to Tennessee this weekend. #25 Clemson gave Boston College their first loss of the season, 19-13. Clemson kicker B.T. Potter hit 4 field goals, while the Tigers’ offense had over 430 total yards. Clemson, also now 3-2, will be off this weekend.

The Atlanta Braves finished the regular season off yesterday as they defeated the New York Mets, 5-0. Atlanta finishes the regular season with a record of 88-73 and in first place of the NL East. The Braves will start the playoffs coming up on Friday when they travel to Milwaukee. The rest of the MLB playoffs were set yesterday, as the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees took the last two spots in the AL. They will now face each other as they will play in the AL Wild Card game. The San Francisco Giants won the NL West over the LA Dodgers. The Dodgers will face the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Wild Card game.

The Atlanta Braves picked up a big win last night over the Philadelphia Phillies, 7-2.  The Braves took the lead early off hits from Austin Riley and Adam Duvall. Solid pitching also helped the Braves. Max Fried went 7 innings, giving up 4 hits, 2 runs, and striking out 6. Fried was the winning pitcher for Atlanta. Aaron Nola was the losing pitcher for Philadelphia. Atlanta is now just one win away from winning the NL East title for the fourth year in a row. They will look to do that tonight, as they will meet the Phillies again tonight. First pitch is at 7:20 p.m. Ian Anderson will get the start for the Braves. He will face Phillies pitcher Kyle Gibson. Clemson junior WR Justyn Ross was named one of three nominees for the 2021 Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the year. This award is given to a college football player who has overcome injury, illness, or other challenges. Also nonmined were OL Avery Samuels from Stetson University and WR Corey Sutton from Appalachian State University. More individuals will be named as the season continues. Ross missed last year after having surgery when a congenital fusion condition of his neck and spine was discovered by doctors. He currently has 22 catches, the most of any Clemson player, for 216 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Atlanta Braves opened up their big series with the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday with a win, 2-1.  The Braves took the lead in the 3rd off a two-run single from Jorge Soler. The Phillies got on the board in the 9th as Didi Gregorius had a sac fly to right, but the Braves were able to hold the final batters in check to get the win.  Charlie Morton picked up the win for Atlanta. Zack Wheeler was the losing pitcher for Philadelphia. Will Smith was credited with the save for Atlanta, as well. The Braves and Phillies will meet again tonight at Truist Park. After suffering their second loss of the season, Clemson fell in the new AP poll. The Tigers are now ranked #25 in the new poll after losing to NC State this past weekend. This snaps a streak of 97 straight weeks in the top 10 of the poll. Clemson also found out that starting defensive tackle Bryan Bresee torn his ACL in the loss to NC State. He will be out the rest of the season. RB Will Shipley will also miss time due to a leg injury. Coastal Carolina stayed in 16th place in the poll. Alabama remained on top, while Georgia, Oregon, Penn St., and Iowa rounded out the top 5.

A number of games were canceled yesterday. The Union County JV and Varsity volleyball game set for yesterday at Broome was canceled due to COVID issues. Their game tomorrow with Chapman has also been canceled. Union County girls tennis had their game at Broome yesterday canceled due to weather.

Sims volleyball lost to Clifdale on Monday, 3-2. According to volleyball coach Tracy Duncan, the team started slow and lost the first two games. They then won games 3 and 4 before losing the final game. They are back in action today as they host Mabry.

Even though the college football season has just begun and the South Carolina Gamecocks have only played 3 games, the 2022 schedule was released last night. The Gamecocks will open up the season on September 3rd as they host Georgia State and former OL coach Shawn Elliott. The first SEC game on the schedule comes the next week when the team travels to Arkansas. Notable home games on the schedule include Georgia, Texas A&M, and Tennessee. Other non-conference games include the Gamecocks hosting Charlotte and South Carolina St. The regular season will come to a close with a trip to Clemson on November 26th.

The Atlanta Braves continued their series with the Arizona Diamondbacks with a win last night, 6-1. Atlanta had three different players homer in the game--Austin Riley, Ozzie Abies, and Jorge Soler. Drew Smyly was the winning pitcher for Atlanta. Luke Weaver picked up the loss for Arizona. The series will continue this evening. The new AP college football poll saw two schools from the state of South Carolina drop spots. Clemson fell 3 spots to #9 in the AP poll after their win over Georgia Tech, 14-8. Coastal Carolina also dropped one spot in the poll from #16 to #17. Coastal defeated Buffalo this past weekend, 28-25. Alabama and Georgia both stayed atop the poll in 1st and 2nd place. Oregon moved up to the 3rd spot. Oklahoma and Iowa round out the top five.

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney gave updates on two players last night after the win over Georgia Tech. Defensive tackle Tyler Davis will miss time with a torn bicep. Running back Lyn-J Dixon will be leaving the Tigers, as he has now entered the transfer portal.

Week three of the college football season this past weekend saw very interesting outcomes for local teams. #6 Clemson defeated Georgia Tech, 14-8. The Tigers' offense struggled and only had 284 total yards in the win. The game also had to deal with weather and a lightning delay, as well. Clemson will travel to N.C. State this weekend. The South Carolina Gamecocks fell to #2 Georgia, 40-13. The Gamecocks trailed by 20 points at halftime and only had one touchdown in the loss. South Carolina will host Kentucky this weekend.

The Jonesville football game that was scheduled for today at Spartanburg Christian Academy has been canceled, according to Jonesville Middle Athletic Director Jay Voiselle. The Atlanta Braves fell in extra innings last night to the Colorado Rockies, 3-2. Colorado took the lead in the 5th, but Atlanta responded with a home run from Eddie Rosario. In the 10th, Raimel Tapia singled to center, giving the Rockies the lead and later the win. Carlos Estevez was the winning pitcher for Colorado. A.J. Minter was the losing pitcher for Atlanta. The NASCAR Cup series released their 2022 schedule yesterday. The new schedule features one new track, World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, which is in St. Louis. A few different races moved dates, including the Bristol Dirt Race, now being held on Easter. The playoffs also saw a shakeup, with several races moving around. This all comes one day after it was announced that the Busch Clash was moving to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Both Clemson and South Carolina had players recognized after their wins this past weekend. For the Tigers, running back Will Shipley was named ACC Rookie of the week. Shipley had 80 yards on 8 carries and 2 touchdowns in the win over South Carolina State. For the Gamecocks, kicker Parker White was named SEC co-special teams player of the week. White had two field goals in the 4th quarter, including the game winner at East Carolina.

The new college football AP poll had a few changes after a number of teams suffered losses or bad performances this past weekend. Alabama, Georgia, and Oklahoma remained in the top spots. Oregon moved to 4th after their win over Ohio St. Iowa also moved into the top 5 with their win over Iowa St. Clemson stayed in 6th place. Coastal Carolina moved up one spot after defeating Kansas to 16th place.

Washington tied the game in the 7th off a 3-run homer from Yadiel Hernandez. It was announced yesterday by the Braves that they had signed RHP Charlie Morton to a one-year contract worth $20 million, with an option for 2023 as well. Morton, who signed with Atlanta this past offseason, has had a good season for the Braves. He is 13-5 with a 3.47 ERA in 28 starts this season.

College football officially returned this weekend. Both Clemson and South Carolina saw their seasons get underway, but with different outcomes for each team. #3 Clemson fell to #5 Georgia in Charlotte, 10-3. The Tigers never found the end zone against the Bulldogs. Georgia’s only touchdown came in the 2nd quarter off a pick-six from defensive back Christopher Smith. South Carolina shut out Eastern Illinois in Columbia, 46-0. Coach-turned-starting-quarterback Zeb Noland threw 4 touchdowns as the Gamecock defense held the Panthers to just 109 total yards. Both teams return to action next Saturday. Clemson will host South Carolina St., while South Carolina will travel to East Carolina.

The Atlanta Braves split their series with the Colorado Rockies this past weekend. After winning the Thursday game, Atlanta lost both the Friday and Saturday games. Atlanta found their bats again yesterday as they hit four home runs to close out the series with a win, 9-2. Atlanta only has a 2-game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East after their 7-game West Coast trip. The Braves have today off before returning to action at home tomorrow against the Washington Nationals.

In the first race of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, Denny Hamlin won the Cook Out Southern 500 from Darlington Raceway last night. A number of playoff hopefuls, including Chase Elliott and Kyle Busch, had issues in the race. Kyle Larson finished second. Ross Chastain, Martin Truex Jr., and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top five. The playoffs continue next week as the teams travel to Richmond.

The Atlanta Braves opened their 4-game series with the Colorado Rockies with a win last night, 6-5. Atlanta had the lead early, but a grand slam by Charlie Blackmon gave Colorado the lead in the 3rd. Atlanta fought back with big hits from Dansby Swanson and Adam Duvall to pick up the win. Atlanta will keep their series with Colorado going this weekend. The NASCAR Cup series playoffs begin this weekend from Darlington Raceway. The Cook Out Southern 500 will be the first race in the round of 16. Last week's winner Ryan Blaney has the pole for the race. It will get underway Sunday at 6 p.m.

The Atlanta Braves dropped their final game to the Los Angeles Dodgers last night, 4-3. The Dodgers swept the Braves in the 3-game series. LA took the lead early off home runs from Max Munch and Austin Barnes. Atlanta fought back and took the lead with home runs from Eddie Rosario and Dansby Swanson. LA came back though in the 8th, as AJ Pollock singled to left to give the Dodgers the winning run. With the series over with the Dodgers, Atlanta now moves on to take on the Colorado Rockies for a 4-game series. First pitch tonight is set for 8:40 p.m. Touki Toussaint will get the start tonight for Atlanta on the mound. Chi Chi Gonzalez will get the start for Colorado. After the Union County JV football team had their game against Laurens canceled on Monday due to Covid-19 issues with the Laurens team, the team was able to find a new opponent. The JV game will still be played Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Union County High School Track Field. The opponent has not yet been announced.

With the first game of the season on Saturday, South Carolina football released its depth chart yesterday. Quarterback Zeb Noland, a graduate assistant who was on the coaching staff a few weeks ago, was named the starting quarterback for the season opener against Eastern Illinois. Noland played for North Dakota State as well as Iowa State. He was added to the roster after starter Luke Doty was injured in practice. Doty looks to return to the lineup in a few weeks.

All 32 NFL teams announced their 53-man rosters yesterday ahead of the first regular-season games later this month. Former Union County and South Carolina Gamecocks wide receiver Shi Smith made the Carolina Panthers 53-man roster. Smith finished the preseason with 5 catches for 82 yards in the Panthers' 3 preseason games. Smith was injured in the final preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers this past weekend. It is unsure if he will miss any time from the injury.

The Atlanta Braves won two out of three games from the San Francisco Giants this weekend. Atlanta won a close game on Friday, 6-5. San Francisco then shut out the Braves Saturday night, 5-0. Atlanta returned the favor yesterday as they shut out the Giants, 9-0. Atlanta is now 70-59 on the season. The have a four and a half game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East. The Braves go out west starting today. They travel to Los Angeles to start a 3-game series with the Dodgers. First pitch tonight is set for 10:10 p.m. We will have pregame starting around 8:55 p.m.

Ryan Blaney won his second straight race Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway in the Cup series regular season finale. Blaney jumped out to the lead on the overtime finish and was able to escape several late crashes. Chris Buescher finished second but was later disqualified after post-race tech was finished. With Buescher being disqualified, Bubba Wallace, Ryan Newman, Ryan Preece, and Tyler Reddick round out the top five. Reddick also picked up the last spot in the Cup series 16-driver playoff. The playoffs will get underway this weekend at Darlington.

Former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence was named the starter for the Jacksonville Jaguars yesterday by head coach Urban Meyer. The first overall pick of this year’s draft will face the Houston Texans to open up the season on September 12th. This news comes one day after Jacksonville announced that former Clemson running back and first-round pick Travis Etienne would miss the upcoming season due to a Lisfranc injury. Another running back with state ties will also miss the season. Former South Carolina and current Dallas Cowboy player Rico Dowdle was placed on injured reserve yesterday due to a hip injury.

Four South Carolina football players were named to the coaches’ preseason All-SEC teams. DT JJ Enagbare was named to the first team. RB Kevin Harris was named to the second team. Both TE Nick Muse and DE Zacch Pickens were named to the 3rd team.

Another big change in the world of college sports happened yesterday. The ACC, the BIG 10, and the PAC-12 announced an alliance with each other. This new alliance will consist of 41 schools. It will be a scheduling component for football as well as men’s and women’s basketball in the future. The move comes after the move of Texas and Oklahoma from the BIG 12 to the SEC earlier last month.

The Atlanta Braves lost to the New York Yankees last night, 5-4. Atlanta got on the board first in the 1st inning with a 2-RBI double from Dansby Swanson. A couple of hits and two home runs gave the Yankees the lead as they held the Braves in check the rest of the way. Clay Holmes was the winning pitcher for New York. Charlie Morton was the losing pitcher for Atlanta. Wandy Peralta was credited with the save for New York, as well. Atlanta has the next two days off before they return to action Friday against San Francisco.

Both Clemson and South Carolina had players named to the ESPN Top 100 College Football Players for 2021 yesterday. Clemson had six players named, while South Carolina had two. The Tigers that made the list were defensive tackle Bryan Bresee, wide receiver Justyn Ross, defensive end Myles Murphy, quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei, defensive tackle Tyler Davis, and defensive tackle Xavier Thomas. The Gamecocks on the list were linebacker Kingsley Enagbare and running back Kevin Harris. Both Clemson and South Carolina start the season on September 4th.

The Atlanta Braves lost their first game to the New York Yankees last night after winning nine straight, 5-1. Giancarlo Stanton had a big game for New York. Stanton had a homer in the 2nd, as well as a 2-RBI double in the 6th. The only run of the game for the Braves came in the 2nd when Dansby Swanson hit his 24th home run of the season. Jordan Montgomery picked up the win on the mound for New York. Huascar Ynoa was credited with the loss for Atlanta. Both teams will meet again tonight. Ten new members were elected to the University of South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame, according to an announcement by the university on Friday. The class includes football standouts John Abraham, Mike Durrah, and Connor Shaw; baseball pitcher Michael Roth; women’s basketball coach Nancy Wilson; volleyball coach Kim Williams; track and field standout Ron Willis; men’s basketball player Scotti Ward; women’s basketball player Brantley Southers; and former Athletic Director Dr. Mike McGee. They will be inducted into the Hall of Fame on October 14.

The Atlanta Braves swept the Baltimore Orioles this weekend. On Friday, Atlanta shut out the Orioles, 3-0. Atlanta had to hold off a late push by the Orioles on Saturday. Will Smith picked up the save for Atlanta as they won, 5-4. Yesterday, Atlanta jumped out to a lead early. Baltimore was not able to get anything going late as the Braves won, 3-1. Atlanta has now won 9 straight games as they have swept their last 3 series. They currently sit in first place in the NL East with a record of 68-56. They have a 5-game lead over Philadelphia. Blaney held off Hendrick Motorsports teammates William Byron and Kyle Larson on a late restart to grab his second win of the season. Kurt Busch and Denny Hamlin round out the top five. It was announced last night that Union County High School football will miss another game this season. Due to mandatory quarantine requirements and return-to-play protocols, Union County will not be able to play Gaffney next week. It was announced earlier this week that Union County had canceled this week’s game against Chester. The Yellow Jackets will now start the season at Laurens on September 3.

The Atlanta Braves finished the sweep of the Miami Marlins last night as they won, 11-9. The Braves jumped out early to the lead. Miami tried to make a comeback late, but Atlanta pitching held on to grab the win. Atlanta 1B Freddie Freeman also hit for the cycle in the game. The reigning NL MVP had a single in the fifth, a double in the first, a triple in the fourth, and he homered in the sixth. Freeman becomes the first-ever Brave to hit for the cycle twice, as he also did it back in 2016. Charlie Morton was the winning pitcher for Atlanta. Jesus Luzardo was the losing pitcher for Miami.

With the Miami series now finished, Atlanta sits at 65-56. They now have a 3-game lead over Philadelphia in the NL East. Atlanta is off today before returning to action on Friday as they travel to Baltimore.

Union County Parks and Recreation will have their football and cheer draft this Saturday at Union County Stadium. For football, 6-7 years old will start the draft at 9 a.m. 8-9 years old will then go at 10 a.m. 10-12 years old will draft at 11 a.m. All cheerleaders will be drafted at 10 a.m. Even if parents and children cannot attend, they will still be drafted to a team.

The Atlanta Braves won their 5th-straight game last night as they shut out the Miami Marlins, 2-0. Jorge Soler gave Atlanta the lead in the 8th off a single to right. Austin Riley then hit his 25th home run of the year in the 9th. Chris Martin was credited with the win for Atlanta. Sandy Alcantara was the losing pitcher for Miami. Will Smith was credited with the save for Atlanta, as well.

Atlanta and Miami will finish their series tonight. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. Charlie Morton will get the start for Atlanta. He will face Marlins pitcher Jesus Luzardo. We will have pregame starting at 5:55 p.m.

Sports 8-17-21

It was announced yesterday that the season opener for Union County football against Chester has been canceled. The team was set to play at Union County Stadium on Friday. In a press release, the school announced that the team had several cases of COVID-19 within the program. The team hopes to return to practice Wednesday. The first game of the season will now be at Gaffney next week. The first home game of the season is now set for September 17th when Greer comes to town. The JV football game this week has been canceled, as well.

The first Associated Press Top 25 poll was released yesterday for college football. Alabama was on top of the poll. They received 47 first-place votes. Oklahoma came in second place, with Clemson coming in third. Ohio State and Georgia also received first-place votes and rounded out the top five. The rest of the top ten were Texas A&M, Iowa State, Cincinnati, Notre Dame, and North Carolina. Coastal Carolina came in at #22.

The Atlanta Braves opened their 3-game series last night with a win, defeating the Miami Marlins, 12-2. Atlanta fell behind early, but home runs from Freddie Freeman and Adam Duvall allowed the Braves to take the lead in the 4th. They would add runs in the 6th and 7th as they rolled to victory. Touki Toussaint was the winning pitcher for Atlanta. Braxton Garrett was credited with the loss.

Atlanta and Miami will meet again tonight. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. Huascar Ynoa will make his return to the mound this evening for Atlanta. He has been out since May with a fractured hand. We will have pregame coverage coming your way at 5:55 p.m.

With college football a few weeks away, South Carolina is dealing with an injury to one of their most important players. Starting quarterback Luke Doty suffered a sprained ankle in practice on Friday. He is now questionable to start the season opener against Eastern Illinois on September 4th. Doty started the last two games last season for the Gamecocks. He could be replaced by either Colten Gauthier or Jason Brown.

The Atlanta Braves swept the Washington Nationals this weekend to take sole possession of the NL East. On Friday, Atlanta came back late to win, 4-2. They then rolled past Washington Saturday night, 12-2. Atlanta closed out the series yesterday with a win, 6-5. The Braves had 11 home runs in the series against the Nationals, with 4 coming from Dansby Swanson. Atlanta now has a record of 62-56. They lead the division by just one game over the Philadelphia Phillies.

 

The Braves kick off a 3-game series today as they travel to Miami to face the Marlins. Touki Toussaint will get the start tonight for Atlanta. He will face Marlins pitcher Braxton Garrett. First pitch tonight is set for 7:10 p.m. We will have pregame coverage starting at 5:55 p.m.

Week one of the NFL preseason came to a close yesterday. The Carolina Panthers lost a close game yesterday to the Indianapolis Colts, 21-18. Union County native and former South Carolina Gamecock wide receiver Shi Smith made his debut with the Panthers in the game. He had one catch for 26 yards in the loss. Carolina returns to Spartanburg to continue training camp this week. They will next play the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday in Charlotte.

The first-ever NASCAR Cup Series race on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Road Course had a lot of drama yesterday. AJ Allmendinger picked up the surprise win in the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard. The race saw two huge wrecks involving multiple cars in the final laps. On the final restart, leader Chase Briscoe missed a turn, forcing NASCAR to penalize him. Briscoe, unaware of the penalty, then spun out leader Denny Hamlin. This gave Allmendinger the lead and allowed him to pick up just his second career win in the Cup series. This is also the first Cup series win for Kaulig Racing. Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson, Chase Elliott, and Matt DiBenedetto round out the top five. The series travels to Michigan next week.
