After search, suspect arrested by SLED agents
The Union County Sheriff’s Office released more information about the shooting incident off of Highway 49 East on Monday. According to the release, the sheriff’s office received a call late Monday morning regarding a shooting incident at 246 Frank Hill Loop. Upon arriving at the scene, deputies noticed a male laying on his side in the yard. The victim stated he heard an argument outside, so he went to see what was going on. The victim encountered the suspect, who was armed, and he heard a bang. The victim felt a pain and realized he had been shot. The victim said the suspect then left the scene. EMS transported the victim to Spartanburg Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.
Through the investigation, deputies learned the suspect was Chad T. Lawter of Union. Arrest warrants were signed on Lawter, charging him with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime.
On Tuesday, the Union County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that Lawter was in the Kelly Road area. Deputies went there and found his car. The sheriff’s office and SLED began actively searching the area with K-9 units and SLED’s aviation unit. Lawter was finally found early Wednesday morning in Cherokee County. SLED agents took him into custody.
In addition to the attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime charge, Lawter was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted violent felon.
The warrants state the victim was shot in the backside as he attempted to run away.
