22-year-old charged with discharging firearm in the city and malicious damage

An arrest has been made in a shooting incident that took place in the city last September. 22-year-old Yari Niko Mahdi Smith is charged with discharging a firearm in the city and malicious damage to property. The incident took place on September 25, 2021, behind Keenan’s Barber Shop at 214 North Pinckney Street. Keenan reported the incident, stating that Smith had shot at another subject, who was possibly struck. He stated the other subject had a knife and a pair of brass knuckles and had been messing with Smith’s car. After telling Smith not to bother the vehicle, the argument escalated, and Smith shot at the other man, who fell to the ground and had possibly been hit. He got up and started running again, however. Officers found a total of six 45-caliber fired bullet casings and two unfired 45-caliber bullets at the scene, along with the knife that belonged to the other man.

Following investigation, Smith was arrested on Monday and charged in connection with the incident. The malicious damage charge stems from the fact that one of the bullets entered the front door of an apartment being renovated on Gadberry Street, shattering the glass in the door, and going into a wall inside the apartment.
