Barbara Rippy to Hold Fundraising Rummage Sale

Daniel Prince

Proceeds to support the library's summer reading program

For years, Barbara Rippy has helped individuals and groups by buying hundreds of items at yard sales and auctions, many of which have been stored at her former business location at 125 East Main Street. Rippy has donated that building to USC Union, so now those things are being cleared out. To do that, there will be a huge yard sale the next two Saturdays, May 21 and May 28, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the former Smith’s Drug Store building at 125 East Main Street.

Proceeds will be going to fund the summer reading program at the Union County Library System. Library board members Kathy Nance Rogers and Rebecca N. Rochester have spent six days going through everything in the building getting ready for the sale. The sale will feature useful items, unusual items, and collectors items. Many new items are still in the boxes. Furniture will be part of the sale on May 28. Everything will be half-price during the final hour of the sale both days, from 12-1 p.m.

The money raised will provide funds for lanyards, badges, prizes, and activity packs during the library’s summer reading program. This year’s summer reading program starts June 6th with the theme, “Oceans of Possibilities”. Once again this year, the library will be using the Beanstack program to track and log reading and programs attended. You can register at www.unionlibrary.beanstack.org. Patrons will receive a lanyard when signing up and will have a chance to earn up to 17 badges throughout the summer. The badges relate to the number of books read, the number of weekly activities completed, and the number of special events attended. Those earning at least 10 badges will receive the completion badge. Those who sign up on Beanstack can pick up a treasure chest, which is a bag full of weekly activities, on June 7 or June 9 from 3-6 p.m. and receive a free Kona Ice. For more information on summer reading, call the library at 427-7140.
