Cancer Awareness Walk Scheduled Later This Month

Daniel Prince

Walk will raise awareness, not money

There will be a Cancer Awareness Walk event scheduled at Foster Park Lake on Saturday, March 26, from 11-3. This is not a fundraiser but is an event to raise awareness. Organizers note that early detection and awareness about cancer and other health issues saves lives. They have invited many organizations that serve Union County to share what they do to help those in need.

They say you can walk as little or as much as you want, and you will be asked to walk in memory or in honor of a loved one that has battled cancer, or you can walk as a survivor. You will be asked to put the name of the person for which you are walking on a card, which will be placed on a board on site to be prayed over and celebrated. They will serve a free hot dog meal, with meal tickets given after you walk.

For the kids, they will have free books and games and will have a fire truck and police car on site. The Blood Connection will be on hand to take blood donations during the event.

The Bearden Josey Center for Breast Health’s mobile mammography unit will be there, as well. To make an appointment, call 864-560-7777. Women ages 35 and older with no current breast symptoms and who are not pregnant or breast feeding are welcome to make an appointment. You must be able to walk up the unit stairs.

The event is sponsored by the SC Cancer Alliance, Bethlehem UMC, Bethany AME Church, and KJ’s Market.
