Checks are Being Stolen from Post Office Drop Boxes

Daniel Prince

One person arrested already, but sheriff's office warns citizens to be careful

Captain Scott Coffer with the Union County Sheriff’s Office sent out a press release on Monday regarding mail thefts from local drop boxes. In February, the sheriff’s office received reports by local citizens that mail was being taken from Post Office drop boxes. In those cases, checks had been taken and forged in other names. Those checks were then cashed or deposited into accounts with banks statewide.

Coffer said the sheriff’s office is working with other agencies to arrest those responsible. He said there are several persons of interest in the case. He said one person has been arrested, but the cases are ongoing. He said to check your bank accounts and make sure checks have cleared or arrived at their destination. He also said that if you are sending important documents, money, or valuables, you should place them inside the post office rather than in the drop boxes. If you have been a victim, please contact 911 to file a report with local law enforcement.
