Relationship carried out at the Union County Detention Center
A corrections officer at Perry Correctional Institution is accused of having sex with an inmate at the Union County Detention Center. According to a release by the SC Department of Corrections, 28-year-old Zuleika Marie Santiago, of Spartanburg, is charged with two counts of first-degree sexual misconduct with an inmate. According to the arrest warrants, an Office of Inspector General investigation revealed the misconduct.
After being given her Miranda warning, the warrants state that Santiago admitted to meeting an inmate of the SC Department of Corrections on the grounds of the Union County Detention Center multiple times, two of which she admitted to willfully engaging in sexual intercourse with the inmate. The relationship was carried out between September 1st and December 13th of this year. Santiago has been fired. Bond was set at $7500 on the charges, and Santiago has been released on bond.
The SC Department of Corrections reminds everyone that after an arrest, the burden of proof is on the state to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt within a court of law.
