Nearly $22 million in grants received for the three projects

At a press conference Friday morning, officials from throughout Union County celebrated the nearly $22 million in grant funding awarded to three different projects in the county through the Rural Infrastructure Authority. As WBCU News reported early last week, the Union and Jonesville Regional Wastewater project received $8,868,000 in federal funds, plus another $500,000 in state funds. The City of Union also received $2,673,125 for the Cherokee Sewer Rehabilitation project, and the Meansville-Riley Road Water Company was awarded $9,840,365 for the upgrade and replacement of the Highway 49 water line.

Union County Development Board Director Dolton Williams said the Union-Jonesville sewer project has been in the works since 2006. He said the announced projects will open up two growth corridors in the county—Highway 49 and Highway 176.

Supervisor Phillip Russell talked about the teamwork that it took to land the funding for these projects:

Dolton Williams told WBCU News that having the projects funded and in the works will help the Development Board market properties to industries looking to locate in Union County but who need industrial sewer services. The cost to the city, the county, and the Town of Jonesville for the project is estimated to be around $100,000 each.
