County to apply for grants for addition to Timken Complex, improvements to South Hills

Tuesday’s Union County Council meeting was a short one, lasting less than 10 minutes. Walter Rider was recognized for five years with the Union County Public Works Department. Supervisor Phillip Russell noted that Rider has worked for the Public Works Department a few other times in the past, as well.

Russell gave the council a copy of an invoice from Carlisle Associates for $23,750. The county used their services for coming up with two sets of plans so the county could apply for grants for the projects. The first set of plans is for an addition to the Timken Sports Complex with additional parking included. The second set of plans is for improvements to the South Hills Complex. The county is going after a grant from the Timken Foundation for the work at the Timken Complex, and they are going after a grant from the State Parks and Recreation Department for the work at South Hills. Russell noted that another $15,000-$17,000 will come due to Carlisle Associates in the next fiscal year for engineering drawings and the like. Council approved paying the invoice for $23,750 out of the county’s hospitality funds, as the projects are tied in with tourism.

Next, council passed the second reading of the budget for fiscal year 2023-2024. Russell stated the county finance committee will meet on Tuesday, May 23, to hopefully finalize the budget, saying that all that remains to work on the capital needs and figure out how to cover the projected shortfall. A public hearing and final reading of the budget will take place during the June 20 regular council meeting.
