County's audit will be presented at the meeting
Union County Council will hold two public hearings and its regular monthly meeting this afternoon. All the meetings will be in the Grand Jury Room at the Union County Courthouse at 210 West Main Street. The first public hearing begins at 4:30 and will be the annual public hearing regarding the Community Needs Assessment. The hearing is required by the Catawba Regional Council of Governments in order to pursue community development block grant funding. They are looking for public input on community needs and priorities for housing, public facilities, and economic development.
At 5:15, the second public hearing will begin. They will take comments from the public concerning the sale and conveyance of the City Park property at 615 West Main Street to USC Union through the Union-Laurens Commission on Higher Education. The public is invited to attend and participate in these hearings.
At 5:30, County Council will convene its regular monthly meeting. Andrew Dobson with Halliday, Schwartz, and Company will present the county’s financial audit. Lakenya Young and Hannah Jarrett will be on hand to discuss the United Way of the Piedmont. Jarrett is the Vice President of Community and Collective Impact. Young is the Union County Community Resource Coordinator for the United Way. Council will then consider appointments to standing committees. The committees are: County Administration and Finance; Public Roads, Bridges, and County Property; Personnel, County Offices, and Departments; Public Health and Social Services; Law Enforcement, Judiciary, and Recreation; and Planning and Development. Next, council will consider any requests to fill vacant budgeted positions and requests for capital funds.
Council will then consider matching funds for the approved Regional Tourism Plan. Council had previously approved a local match of $21,500 for the $50,000 Appalachian Regional Commission grant application. The recommendation is to pay for the match from the Hospitality and Accommodations Fund 215.
After any reports from elected officials, there will only be one ordinance for council to consider. That is the third reading of the ordinance to sell the City Park property on West Main Street to the Union-Laurens Commission on Higher Education.
There will be a time set aside for reports by Supervisor Phillip Russell, county committees, and individual council members. After that, the meeting will adjourn.
The public is invited to attend the meeting. In addition, it will be streamed live on the county’s Facebook page, at www.facebook.com/GearUpUnionSC.
