County Council to Meet Tonight

Daniel Prince

Jail addition, match for grants to grade Cudd property on the agenda

Union County Council will hold its regular monthly meeting today at 5:30 p.m. in the Grand Jury Room at the Union County Courthouse.

Lockhart Power will present a check to the county for utility tax credits. According to Union County Development Board Director Dolton Williams, these will be used toward developing the Cudd property for industry. Brooke Henderson, Nikoya Shaw, and Erica Rhodes with Access Health will present and review their Community Health Improvement Plan. The Bonham Fire Board and the Bonham Chief Scott Austin will make a presentation to procure a new fire engine. Council will consider approving that request.

Next, council will consider approving the jail addition. At last week’s meeting of the Administration and Finance Committee, the members discussed different funding options for the now $8.6 million project, with the low bid coming in $1.5 million over the approved amount.

Council will then consider a recommendation from the Administration and Finance committee on the industrial development of the Cudd property. The committee is recommending that a $25,000 local match be provided to add to the grants and utility tax credits to pay for construction to begin on a 200,000 square foot concrete pad on the property.

Council will then consider any requests for vacant budgeted positions or capital funds, followed by reports from elected officials.

There are no ordinances or resolutions up for vote on this month’s agenda. Supervisor Phillip Russell will give his report to council, followed by any committee reports or individual reports from council members. They will then enter an executive session to discuss a contractual matter.

The public is invited to attend, and the meeting will be livestreamed to the Union County Facebook page at facebook.com/GearUpUnionSC.
