Union County sees increase in recent cases
The increase in COVID cases has hit Union County, as well. Just in the past three days, there have been 32 confirmed and 16 probable cases, 48 in all. The effects of that increase will be felt this Friday night, as instead of crowds gathering at Union County Stadium to cheer on the Jackets, the stadium will be dark.
The Union County School District announced yesterday that Friday night’s varsity football game at home against Chester has been canceled due to multiple positive COVID-19 cases within the team. Team members were given the opportunity to test yesterday due to exposure. Seven additional positive cases were identified. The decision to cancel was due to the limited number of players that would be available Friday. Practice will resume tomorrow for the players and coaches that have tested negative. Right now, there are no plans to reschedule the game.
There will be no JV football game at Chester. Although the game was on the schedule provided by the athletic department, according to Coach Brian Thompson, there never was a scheduled game, as JV is not allowed to play in week 0. Union County will open the season next Friday night at Gaffney. The home opener will be on September 17 against Greer.
