Unclear if Price was dead before being struck by train

The Union County Coroner’s Office identified the man who was the center of a death investigation on Tuesday. In a press release last night, the coroner’s office said it responded to a death in the Monarch community at around 11:55 a.m. The deceased was identified as 32-year-old Matthew S. Price of Old Buncombe Road in Union. An autopsy is scheduled at Newberry Pathology Group.

According to a release yesterday by Captain Scott Coffer with the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Norfolk Southern called 911 at around 11:41 a.m., stating that a train traveling into Union had hit something on the tracks in the Monarch community. Deputies responded to the area and found multiple items, along with a deceased male lying on the tracks. Investigators began processing the scene. This is an ongoing investigation by the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Union County Coroner’s Office, and Norfolk Southern Railway Police. No further information is available right now.
