DNR Accepting Applications for Archaeology Internship

Daniel Prince

Archaeology internship will attend guest lectures and have other experiences in the field

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is accepting applications for its Summer 2023 SCDNR Archaeology internship program. The six-week internship begins Monday, June 5, and will end on Friday, July 14. The internship is in-person and will take place at the SCDNR’s Parker Annex Archaeology Center at 2025 Barnwell Street in Columbia. Up to eight interns will be selected for the term. Applicants must be enrolled at the time of the internship as rising juniors and seniors in high school, undergraduate, graduate (Masters and PhD) or a recent graduate from any level from high school to Ph.D. Interns at the high school level are unpaid, and those from the undergraduate and graduate levels will be paid $12 an hour. Interns may work up to 40 hours per week. Housing is not provided.

The primary goal of the program is for interns to gain a greater understanding of the diverse field of archaeology and to discover if archaeology or a closely related field is the right career path for them. Interns will attend guest lectures that cover topics including terrestrial and maritime archaeology, forensic anthropology, visual anthropology, archaeology public engagement, museum studies, geographic information system (GIS), and disaster preparedness and recovery. Summer interns will also assist the SCDNR Archaeology team with ongoing public engagement projects and research in the field or in laboratory settings. Please email SCDNR archaeologist Meg Gaillard with any questions or concerns (GaillardM@dnr.sc.gov). The application deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, February 10.
