John Glenn, Kenny Ivey also have filed to run
Elise Ashby has officially announced she is running for Union County Council District 2. The seat was left vacant upon the death of Ralph Tucker. The filing deadline for the race is today at noon. Ashby and Carlisle Fire Chief John Glenn have filed to run as Democrats, and Kenny Ivey has filed to run on the Republican side. Ashby released a two-page statement, which we have posted on our WBCU Facebook page.
In her release, Ashby says that District 2 deserves strong, dedicated representation. She says she wants to represent the needs of District 2 residents and to work tirelessly to improve the entire county. She says she believes that the county government should always prioritize the well-being and the interests of its residents, working hard to ensure that neighborhoods are safe, and families and businesses can thrive.
Ashby is well-known for her work as executive director with the RobinHood Group, which manages the Union County Farm & Craft Market and FoodShare Union County. She has 25 years of international, community, and economic development work starting in Washington, D.C. and expanding to Europe, the Caribbean, and Africa.
She says one of her top priorities is to promote economic growth in the county, saying that our success as a community is directly tied to our ability to grow our farming and local small businesses, attract new businesses, and create job opportunities for our residents, especially high school seniors. She said access to police support, fire hydrants, and high-speed internet is critical in the outlying areas of the county, many of which are in District 2.
WBCU News talked to Ashby, who talked about all she has done since moving to the county a few years ago:
