SC Department of Revenue encourages e-filing return, direct deposit of refund

Today marks the official beginning of tax season, as the IRS and SC Department of Revenue will begin accepting Individual Income Tax returns starting today. The filing deadline is Monday, April 18, for both federal and state returns.

All South Carolina taxpayers are being encouraged to file electronically and to choose direct deposit.
SCDOR Director Hartley Powell says that is “the most convenient, secure, and accurate way to file your return and receive your refund without any delays.” Many South Carolinians are eligible to file online for free with easy-to-use tax preparation software. To view your filing options, visit dor.sc.gov/iit-filing. Make sure you have all W-2s, 1099s, and other necessary documents before you file.

While they will accept returns starting today, they will not begin processing returns until February 7th to allow employers to meet the January 31 W-2 submission deadline. Tax return and refund processing is expected to take 6-8 weeks from February 7 or the date you file, whichever is later, to allow the SCDOR to use all available tools to check for fraud and protect your refund.
