Sheriff Bailey issues warning to parents to be aware of the dangers of edibles
The Union County Sheriff’s Office sent out a warning after a juvenile was arrested for giving a student in Newberry County edible marijuana treats. That student became unresponsive and was taken to the hospital for treatment. Back on December 12, Captain Scott Coffer with the Union County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Major Dennis of the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office. Dennis asked if Coffer could meet him on Renwick Road in Whitmire regarding the incident. When he arrived, Coffer was advised of the incident at the school. Dennis told him that during their investigation, it was learned that more marijuana and “treats” could be at the student’s residence in Union County. Coffer obtained a search warrant, which yielded marijuana, edibles, scales, a grinder, a 9mm handgun, and $1860 in cash from the juvenile’s bedroom. The juvenile was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana. A DJJ complaint form was filled out and served on him while in court in Newberry.
Sheriff Jeff Bailey said in a statement: “We will do our best to educate and work within our school district to be on the lookout for these types of drugs. These types of drugs are very dangerous for our youth due to them looking as sweets and normal food. Parents, please educate your children and make them aware of this situation and express the importance of reporting unusual activity and use of these types of drugs.”
