The next special election will be for County Council District 2, as voters will decide who will fill Ralph Tucker’s unexpired term. The filing period will open at noon on Friday, April 14, and will close at noon on Friday, April 21. Party primaries, if needed, will be held on Tuesday, June 13, with the special election set for Tuesday, August 15. The winner will serve Tucker’s remaining term through 2024.
One candidate has already announced he will run for the seat. Kenny Ivey will file as a Republican in the race. Ivey’s full press release can be found on our WBCU Facebook page. In that release, Ivey said he feels that Union is moving forward, and he wants the county to continue to move and grow in the right direction. He said he feels that through building community relations and better transparency, the Union County Council can lead Union to achieve this growth. He applauds the Community Clean Up Days that began in March and would support more and expanded events like these to make Union County more inviting and welcoming to newcomers and industry alike. Ivey also supports the efforts of local law enforcement and commends our local police and sheriff’s departments on their efforts not only on the streets enforcing laws but in creating or supporting programs such as the Union County Behavioral Health Task Force and the Love Thy Neighbor group that work with other stakeholders to solve issues that affect the community.
Ivey, along with his wife Joye, has owned Sanders Garden Center since 2006. He said that along with prior work experience in landscaping and in industry has given him the management and communication skills necessary to be a successful leader and has prepared him to serve the county well. He said he feels called to represent and treat people the right way while striving to do what is best for the whole community. He said he wants to make Union a place where his children and future grandchildren can live and prosper.
