District hopes 300 families will sign reading pledge
Union County First Steps is partnering with the Union County Library System, Union County Parks and Recreation, and the Union County School District to once again offer the annual KidsFest event. It will take place at Foster Park on Saturday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with fun for the whole family. There will be free food, games, and door prizes. Special guests will include Zahmariya “Peanut” Littlejohn, Miss Union County Teen; Madyson Gregory, Miss Union County Fair Teen; Bianca Monteith, Miss USC Union; and mascot appearances by USC Union’s Bantam and Mickey Mouse. Aside from the main sponsors, other participants will include Union County DSS, Union County EMS, Union Lions Club, United Way of the Piedmont, City of Union Fire Department smokehouse, Buffalo Fire Department, C4 Ministries, Gibbs Cancer Center, Healthy U Behavioral Health Services, Jonesville Head Start, Powerful Praying Parents, ReGenesis Health Care, RobinHood Group, SC DHEC, SC Legal Services, and Woodmen Life. Again, the event is set for Saturday, April 15, from 10-1 at Foster Park.
In addition to that event, the Union County School District will again host a drive-through event in the Foster Park Elementary School parking lot. Titled “My Family Reads”, the event will go on at the same time as KidsFest, from 10-1. Drive through the parking lot, take home books and resources, enter to win prizes, and sign the pledge to read to your child every day. The first 100 families to attend will receive a literacy game to enjoy with their family. Every parent who takes the pledge will be entered to win one of several yearly subscriptions to the Union County News. The district’s goal is to have 300 families sign the reading pledge. The event is co-sponsored by Save the Children and the Union County Library System.
