Thinking Money for Kids exhibit opens Thursday at the library

The Union County Library System will hold its virtual Grow With Me program today at 10 a.m. It will be posted to the library’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

On Thursday, the national exhibit Thinking Money for Kids will open. The library is one of 50 sites across the nation to host the exhibit, and the only one in South Carolina. It is a new multimedia experience for children ages 7-11, as well as their parents, caregivers, and educators. It uses games, activities, and a fun storyline to help children understand what money is, its function in society, money choices, and money values, such as fairness, responsibility, and charitableness. The exhibit will be on display at the library from Thursday, February 3rd to Thursday, March 17th.

In addition to being loaned the exhibit, the library will receive $1000 to hold public events related to the exhibit. They have four events planned. The first is a kick-off family game night on Tuesday, February 8th, from 4-6 p.m. It will feature games for all ages that involve money, such as Life, Monopoly, Act Your Wage, Pay Day, and Exact Change. Snacks will be provided.

On Tuesday, February 22, at 10 a.m., they will have a Thinking Money Storytime, primarily for ages 0-5.

On Tuesday, March 8, from 4-6 p.m., they plan a family-oriented craft night called Paint Your Piggybank, focusing on the importance of having fun while saving money.

The week the exhibit closes, on Tuesday, March 15, from 4-6 p.m., they have an Unwind Time for adults called “Plan for the Future and Plant Your Money”. The library will provide money plant seeds and planters. They say, “Let’s have some fun, get our hands dirty, and talk about money.”

The exhibit and all events are free and open to the public. They will all be held at the Carnegie Library. The exhibit is made possible through a competitive national grant from the American Library Association and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation.
