SCC saw 51.5% increase in enrollment since offering free tuition
Spartanburg Community College will remain free for students through the fall of 2024. Through the Live to Chase initiative that the school announced earlier this week, free tuition will be extended for all the college’s more than 70 different programs of study. The initiative focuses on promoting persistence and the willingness to chase by requiring that free tuition recipients be enrolled in a program that awards either a certificate or degree and maintain at least a 2.2 GPA. Students will have to either live or work full-time in South Carolina, complete a FAFSA, and take a minimum of six credit hours.
Two years ago, Spartanburg Community College became the first technical college in the state to offer free tuition, paid for with pandemic relief money and money from strategic partnerships the school made. As a result, the school saw a 51.5% increase in enrollment and currently has the highest enrollment in its 60-year history. The school’s nontraditional population, defined as those students ages 24 and older, increased 63% over the Fall 2019 enrollment numbers.
Spartanburg Community College has campuses in Spartanburg, Cherokee, and Union counties. For more information or to apply for enrollment, visit www.sccgoesfree.com.
