Longtime Educator, School Board Member Dies

Frank M. Hart was a World War 2 veteran and two-time winner of Superintendent of the Year award

WBCU News has learned that longtime educator and current school board member Frank M. Hart has passed away. According to a SC State Senate resolution from 2009 made upon his retirement from the Marion County Board of Education, Hart served as a teacher, principal, and superintendent through the years, earning Superintendent of the Year honors in 1983 and 1988. He was sought by schools and districts to provide direction and guidance as a manager and consultant. He served as chair of the South Carolina State Board of Education and on numerous committees at the state level. Upon moving back to Union County, he served in the Rotary Club of Union and was president of the Union County Historical Society. He was elected to the Union County School Board in 2016, defeating incumbent Kakie White and two other challengers, and won reelection in 2020. He was a World War 2 veteran, having served in the US Navy. In 2014, he was the keynote speaker for the Veterans Day Parade. His wife of 15 years, Nell, passed away earlier this week. Her funeral is scheduled for Saturday at noon at Grace United Methodist Church. His funeral arrangements have not yet been announced. A special election will be needed to fill his unexpired term, which ends in 2024.
