Help is needed with reading, math, and homework

At Tuesday’s community meeting with the Love Thy Neighbor Initiative at Grace United Methodist Church, one of the three main focuses dealt with helping children struggling in school. The Union Housing Authority is currently looking to hire a part-time after-school coordinator to oversee homework help and tutoring of students at their sites. Beyond that, the Love Thy Neighbor group wants to expand the help to others who may need it, as well.

County Council member Carolyn Rutherford talked about the need for such interventions:

The group primarily talked about the who, the what, and the where of helping the kids. They decided the teachers and the school district are best equipped to identify who would best benefit from the program. As for the what, help is needed with reading, math, and homework. As to where this could take place, they mentioned the public meeting spaces at the Housing Authority, going into the schools to do the program, holding it at the Recreation Department, YMCA, or even at churches.

If you are interested in helping with the tutoring program or being part of an advisory committee to help guide the program, contact Bob Love or Dale Goff. The group has set up a Facebook page to collect and distribute information, as well. The page’s name is Union County SC Love Thy Neighbor Group.
