Daniel Prince

The weather is expected to remain clear tonight, perfect for the Main Street Holiday Kickoff. The event will go from 5-8 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Union. Activity is expected from the USC Union Bookstore on the east side of Main to the courthouse on the western end. At least 29 vendors will join 12 stores on Main Street for holiday shopping, featuring food, crafts, and much more. Some of the shops will be offering registration for door prizes throughout the evening.

There will be plenty of entertainment, as well. On the eastern end of Main Street, Tom Mancine and Friends will perform in front of the old Wells Fargo Bank at 5, followed by the Jonesville Elementary 3rd-4th grade chorus at 5:20. At 5:40, Elaine’s Dance Studio will perform outside their studio at 132 East Main Street . Buffalo Elementary’s 4th-5th-grade chorus will sing at 6 in front of Wells Fargo. At 6:20, there will be a demonstration by the Union Karate Center outside their building at 218 East Main Street. Unique Steps Dance Studio will showcase their talents outside WBCU at 6:40, and the Union County High School Band will entertain at 7 outside Wells Fargo.

There will be entertainment on the western end of Main Street at The Depot, the open-air space at 119 West Main Street. The Union County High School Drama Class will be featured there at 5. At 5:25 will be southern gospel with Major Hamby. Welcome Baptist Trio will take the stage at 5:40. Shon Morris will sing there starting at 6, and at 6:45, Unexpected Gospel Singers will be featured. The Stroll With Santa will take place all up and down Main Street from 5-7, with parents encouraged to take your own photos of the kids with Santa for free. At the Union County Arts Council, Vicki Shields will have a Clay Art Demonstration going from 5-7 p.m., so feel free to stop in. Christian Fellowship Baptist Church will have a live nativity set up at 126 East Main Street at the former Greene’s Salvage building. Acoustic Strings with Sally’s Friends will be set up in the Union County Community Development and Tourism Office at 103 West Main Street from 6-7 p.m.

WBCU will be broadcasting live from 5-7 tonight as we officially kick off our Truck Full of Toys campaign for 2021. We encourage you to bring a new, unwrapped toy for a Union County boy or girl to the event tonight, or you can donate money for a toy and let us do the shopping for you. We are hoping for another strong kickoff to the campaign for this year, which will run until the final Christmas Parade of the year, scheduled for Lockhart on Sunday, December 12. After that, all toys will be donated to the Salvation Army for sorting and distribution.

Capping off the evening will be the tree lighting and Christmas sing-along at the Union County Courthouse, scheduled at 7:30 p.m. Bring the family out for the annual kickoff to the Christmas season in downtown Union. Main Street will be closed to traffic from 4-8 p.m. There will be plenty of parking places off Main Street at city and county parking lots. All cars parked on Main will need to be moved by 5 p.m.
