Man accused of stealing two vehicles from Dixie Curb Market parking lot
The Union Public Safety Department has arrested a man on two counts of grand larceny, as well as first-degree domestic violence and marijuana possession. 21-year-old David Demetrius Smith is accused of assaulting his children’s mother last August at her residence. The report states he was visiting the children when she told him he couldn’t stay long because her boyfriend was on his way home. The woman stated that Smith became irate and threw a jug of water on her and then snatched her phone to keep her from calling for help. He put his hand over her mouth to keep her from yelling out for help, and he knocked her to the floor. She said she bit him and was able to get away briefly and run outside. He caught her and knocked her to the ground again. She said he then dragged her across the pavement. A warrant was issued for first-degree domestic violence.
Then, last Tuesday, Pfc Jamison Taylor responded to the Dixie Curb Market, where a woman stated she had parked her Hyundai Sonata in the parking lot and gone into the store. She said three black males were in the parking lot when she arrived. When she came out, the car was gone. The store camera showed the male who took the vehicle was one of the three that was in the parking lot. The camera showed the vehicle driving off toward South Church Street and onto West Henrietta Street. Officers checked the Chambertown area and found the vehicle on Lipsey Street. The driver got out of the vehicle and fled on foot.
Three days later, last Friday, another woman called and reported her 2016 Dodge Journey had been stolen from the Dixie Curb Market parking lot. When she came out from the store, she saw a man drive away in her car. Sgt. Burdine with the Union County Sheriff’s Office saw the vehicle turning into the parking lot at 221 East Main Street and approached the man getting out of the vehicle. He asked him where the vehicle came from, and the man, identified as David Demetrius Smith, admitted taking it from the Dixie Curb Market parking lot. PSO Young came and took Smith into custody. Video evidence confirmed that Smith was the one who stole the vehicle.
Smith is charged with two counts of grand larceny, first-degree domestic violence, possession of marijuana, and driving without a SC driver’s license. Bond was set on the charges at a total of $30,872. Smith remains in the Union County Detention Center.
