Man Injured in Shooting at Local Apartment Complex

Daniel Prince

19-year-old was shot in the arm

A Union man was injured in a shooting incident at the Buena Vista II apartments on Rice Avenue Extension. Last Friday, city units were requested to assist Cpl. Galen Israel of the Union County Sheriff’s Office. Israel was pursuing a subject believed to be running through the woods behind the apartments. PSO Brown arrived and approached the victim of the shooting, identified as 19-year-old Kenneth Barnes, Jr. He had a wound on his upper right arm that was bleeding, and there was a large bag of marijuana beside him. A county deputy was standing by with Barnes as they waited for EMS to arrive. PFC Nations went to join Israel in the pursuit of the suspect. As they went toward the Rose Hill Garden apartments, they saw a vehicle back out of the parking lot and speed off after seeing law enforcement. Sgt. Childers was able to stop the vehicle and identify the driver. PSO Brown spoke with Cpl. Israel about the incident. He stated county units were in the area and heard the shots. When they arrived on scene, someone in a gray BMW was observed throwing a large bag of marijuana out of the window and then stopped the vehicle. Barnes exited the vehicle and approached deputies, who, due to the circumstances, drew their weapons and gave Barnes commands, with which he complied. The vehicle involved in the shooting was towed to Public Safety headquarters for processing. The incident is under further investigation.
