Utility Director Lance Davis named as alternate director to the PMPA Board of Directors

In other business from last week’s Union City Council meeting, Utility Director Lance Davis was selected as an alternate director to the PMPA Board of Directors. Former council member Tommy Anthony had served as alternate since May 2019. City Administrator Joe Nichols is Union County’s representative on the PMPA Board of Directors.

Union NAACP President Leroy Worthy addressed City Council about the group’s Martin Luther King Jr. parade. The parade this past year was held during the summer, but the group hopes to hold the next one on Sunday, January 29, at 2 p.m. Worthy said he hopes the event can draw people from surrounding counties to attend. He said they hope to have a speaker and some music, and they plan to give a scholarship to a high school senior. Worthy said he needed information on city policies regarding parades and street activities to have a safe event. Mayor Thompson advised Worthy to get with Police Chief Robbie McGee on parade policies and what would be needed. He said if funding needs to be requested, it will need to be put on the agenda for the next meeting for council to consider.

Also, LaKenya Young introduced herself to the council. She is the United Way of the Piedmont’s new Community Resource Coordinator for Union County. She will be working from the library. Her role will be to help families in need get to a point of self-sufficiency.
