New Faces on County Council and School Board Highlight Local Elections

Mike Massey and Doc Lipsey retain their seats on the school board

In other local races, Danny Bright defeated incumbent Tracie Farr Campbell for the Union County Council District 1 seat, 919-714. Bright garnered 56.3% of the vote. Annie Smith will be the new County Council District 4 representative, defeating Jennifer Wood with 69.4% of the vote, 1065-469.

In Union County Board of School Trustee races, there will be three new faces and two incumbents back in office after Tuesday night’s vote. Incumbent Mike Massey was unopposed in his District 3 race, and Board Chair Gene “Doc” Lipsey won reelection to his District 4 seat over challenger Rossi Hames, 588-214, getting 73.3% of the vote. Mark Truitt will be the new face of School Board District 5. His opponent, Tommy Mann, withdrew from the race after accepting the call to pastor a church in Savannah, GA. His name was still on the ballot, and Truitt garnered 67% of the vote in the race, winning 549-270. Kelly Wilburn Shropshire was unopposed in the District 8 race. In the closest race, Beth Ramsey Anthony narrowly defeated incumbent Dr. Jane Wilkes for the School Board District 9 seat, 387-365, a 22-vote margin. Anthony received 51.5% of the vote.

Dudley Adams and Michael Lancaster earned the two seats on the Soil and Water District Commission. Adams received 3014 votes, and Lancaster received 2448. Matthew Scales failed to earn a seat, garnering 2157 votes.
