The special election for the Union County Council District 2 seat left vacant by the death of council member Ralph Tucker is a little more than three months away. However, the primary for that race is set a little more than a month from now, on Tuesday, June 13. There will not be a Republican primary, as Kenny Ivey is the only Republican to have filed by the deadline. There will be a Democratic primary, and there is the potential for a primary runoff, as well. Five Democratic candidates initially filed to run for the seat, though one has since withdrawn for the race. Those who will take part in the Democratic primary are Chris Alexander, Elise Ashby, John Glenn, and Ann Stevens-Brown. If a single candidate does not receive 50% + 1 of the total votes cast, a runoff will be needed between the top two candidates. Primary runoffs typically take place two weeks after the primary, which would be Tuesday, June 27. District 2 is the largest district by area, but it still represents a similar number of residents to the other districts. It covers the southern and western portions of Union County.
