Policy doesn't put new restrictions on what can be carried in
With tonight’s home opener of Union County High School football against Gaffney, the Union County School District’s clear bag policy will get its biggest use to date. For those who may not be familiar with the new policy, the school board voted in its July meeting to implement a clear bag policy for sporting events and other major school events.
Spectators will be allowed to carry one large clear bag and a small clutch purse. The clear bag can be up to a gallon-size Ziploc bag or a clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC tote no larger than 12” x 6” x 12”. The small clutch bag can be no larger than 4.5” x 6.5”. Backpacks, even clear ones, will be prohibited under the policy, as will diaper bags, binoculars or camera cases, tinted plastic bags, oversized tote bags, cinch bags, mesh bags, printed pattern plastic bags, computer bags, and fanny packs. Purses larger than 4.5” by 6.5” will be prohibited, as well. Each person, including children, can carry a clear bag. The policy does not place new prohibitions on items that can be taken into such events; rather, it limits the types of bags in which those items can be carried. Seat cushions, camp/folding chairs, and blankets are still allowed but cannot be in a bag or other container and will be subject to search.
Fans carrying bags that don’t meet the criteria will be turned away from the venue at or near the gates. They can then return the prohibited items to their vehicle. An exception will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection. You can still carry keys, makeup, feminine products, comb, phone, wallet, credit cards, etc. in your pockets or jacket if you choose not to put them in a clear bag or clutch.
Appropriately credentialed members of the media will be allowed to bring bags into the venues but may be subject to search. The district notes that randomized bag checks will be done upon entry into venues until such time as metal detectors are completely implemented throughout the district.
