Secure protocol keeps people from entering the school during an incident happening in the community
A report of a suspicious person who might have a weapon at Foster Park led to the nearby Foster Park Elementary School going into secure protocol Tuesday afternoon. School Resource Officer Dell Mitchell initiated the secure protocol after hearing about the report over his radio. Secure protocol is put into place when there is a threat in the surrounding community that the school wants to keep out. No one is allowed into or out of the school building during secure protocol. According to a release Tuesday afternoon by the Union Public Safety Department, officers were dispatched to the park at around 12:24 p.m. for a report of a suspicious person who may have had a weapon. When officers arrived on the scene, they were unable to find a subject matching the description. Officers made contact with the original complainants, who had left the park. They stated the male subject approached them, but they were unsure if he had a weapon, and they left. Officers spoke with several other people around the lake, and none of them saw any type of disturbance. Officers continued to ride the surrounding area to try and find the subject. School dismissal took place as normal, with additional officers in the area as a precaution.
