Parking during ballgames, auditorium roof discussed at meeting

In other news from Tuesday’s Jonesville Town Council meeting, Carl Jennings from Easley appeared before council to request permission to film a music video on some of the streets in Jonesville. He said the song is called Unity, and he fell in love with the town back when he used to do work for Kirby Sanitation within the town. He submitted a template for an agreement with the town. Administrator Michael Tyler requested more information from Jennings on the specifics of the shoot, and he said he would give all the information to the town’s lawyer to make sure things were in order, and he said he hoped he could give Jennings an answer one way or another by the May meeting.

Council member Ann Queen asked Police Chief Carl Jennings about traffic on Office Street that gets bad when ballgames are going on. Jennings said the area probably needs a children at play sign and a speed limit sign there. Tyler said part of the problem in that area is that a couple of blocks on B Street have houses that have no driveways, and so vehicles are being parked in the roadway, essentially creating a one-way street. He said the entire parking situation from Forest Street to the mill site is messed up, that it's small mill town streets that is not set up for the growth that has taken place. They mentioned putting ordinances in place that would require homes being fixed up in the area to have a driveway so that parking on the street would no longer be necessary. Queen said that especially when the new park is built, the town needs to be mindful of traffic and safety in the area.

Tyler said in his public works report that he has been working with a developer and surveying group on a project on the four-lane involving a water line across the highway and tying into the sewer system. He said he still hasn’t heard anything regarding the joint regional sewer project. He said he bought a new 55-gallon weed sprayer on a skid that can be moved among several trucks as the need arises rather than having one bolted onto a single truck as in the past. He said American Rescue Plan Act funds will reimburse the town for the purchase.

Tyler said he got three quotes on fixing the roof on the auditorium. They aren’t ready yet, but the companies did come out and look at everything that needs to be done, including replacing the membrane on the roof, the fascia boards, soffit, and gutters. They all agreed that a metal roof would be the best investment, but in light of the town trying to get the building on the National Historic Registry, they suggested with going with a gray roof rather than blue, as the rest of the municipal complex has. Tyler said he would be checking the Historical Registry guidelines to make sure a metal roof would not be in conflict with that, but he said he thought that by waiting until the roofing work was done to list the building, it would be okay.

We’ll have more from the meeting in tomorrow’s newscast.
