School District Plans Q&A Session on Modified Schedule

Daniel Prince

Meeting will be Thursday at 5 in the high school cafeteria

The Union County School District is planning a question-and-answer session on the proposed modified calendar on Thursday, June 9, from 5-6 p.m. in the UCHS cafeteria. At the April school board meeting, Director of Administration Eric Childers presented a second sample modified calendar based on feedback the district received from the first sample calendar. The calendar has school starting August 1 rather than July 20, while still ending at the end of May. Childers said he accomplished that by moving some intersession days to the end of the calendar, slightly extending the summer break. The intersession periods would be a total of 8 school days instead of 10, the first three of which would fall on a Wednesday through Friday and would be dedicated to remediation and enrichment, followed by a full week off. No action has been taken by the school board yet, though at the May meeting, board member Mike Massey asked if the district would present a proposal to the board to be voted on soon, so that parents can have a year or more to make childcare arrangements and any other arrangements that might need to be made.
