Ralph and Janet Lawson among those retiring this year

The Union County School District has a couple of big events planned to honor some of its teachers and staff. The first is the Teacher of the Year/Support Staff of the Year banquet. That is scheduled for tonight at 6 p.m. at Sunset Farms. The honorees will be Devin Turner and Gloria Farr from Buffalo Elementary; Katie Prince and Shelby Alexander from Foster Park Elementary; Christie Thornton and Debbie Esposito from Jonesville Elementary/Middle; Heather Vinson and Andrew Lee from Monarch Elementary; Ruth Hill, Judy Turner, and Elizabeth Stone from Sims Middle; Chris Ketterman, Tina Lancaster, and Ashley West from the CATE Center; Dillia Mosquera and Brooke Lee from Union County High School; and Amy Kendrick from the Virtual Academy. Stone and West are being honored as Induction Teachers of the Year alongside the regular Teacher of the Year and Support Staff of the Year.

The second event is the district’s retirement banquet, which is scheduled for Thursday, June 2, at 5:30 p.m. at Main Street Junction. While we don’t have a full list of retirees from the district, two we do know are retiring are Ralph and Janet Lawson. Ralph is retiring after 39 years as drama instructor at Union County High School, and Janet has 41 years of elementary education under her belt.

Congratulations to all teachers and staff members set to be honored at these events, and as this is Teacher Appreciation Week, the school district and individual schools have plans to honor each of their teachers throughout the week.
