Smokestack at Former Mill in Jonesville Set to be Demolished

Daniel Prince

Pyrotechnic group to do the demolition, film it

The demolition of the smokestack at the former Wellington Mill site in Jonesville is scheduled for Friday, March 24. They still don’t have a time set for it yet, but town officials will announce it. Administrator Michael Tyler had originally said they were hoping to get it dropped today, but the schedule changed. Controlled Demolition, Inc., a global pyrotechnic company that drops buildings, expressed interest in dropping the smokestack. They will have a drone on site to gather footage, and it is expected to be a big event as the cleanup of the mill site nears its completion. Hepaco is the company doing the cleanup work on site, which includes removing areas of asbestos, cleaning out vegetation, removing concrete pads and walls from the property, taking down and disposing of the smokestack, and grading and seeding the site. This is the first of a multi-phase project to turn the site into a park for community use.
