Southside Fire Department Responds to Camper Fire

Daniel Prince

No injuries reported; $5000 damage to camper, car reported

A camper was damaged by fire Tuesday afternoon. Roger Bailey with the Southside Fire Department stated the department was called at 3:43 p.m. Tuesday to a structure fire at 130 Simmons Road. Bailey said the property belongs to Paul Rhinehart.

When firefighters arrived, they discovered it was not a structure fire, but a combination fire, with a camper, a car, some wood products, and other assorted items on fire. Southside called on Monarch and Santuc fire departments to respond with their tanker trucks due to a lack of fire hydrants in the area. Firefighters used 10 gallons of foam to cover it after extinguishing the fire.

Bailey said the cause of the fire was accidental. It began in the camper, as work was being done to the camper. Damage was estimated at $5000, but thankfully, no one was injured. Fire personnel stayed on scene for two hours.
