State Tax Rebates Appear in Time for the Holidays

Daniel Prince

Legislature voted for the rebates in June, worth up to $800

If you noticed extra money in your bank account in the past three or four weeks, you have the SC state legislature to thank. They voted back in June for the Comprehensive Tax Cut Act of 2022, which set aside $1 billion to use as tax rebates for SC citizens with SC income tax liabilities. Up to $800 was given for each tax return filed that showed the liability. The SC Department of Revenue has finished issuing the rebates for those who filed returns by October 17. If you filed a return after October 17, your rebate will come in March.

More than 1.39 million rebates totaling over $942 million have been issued. Most of the rebates were sent by direct deposit, but some paper checks were sent out, as well. If you filed your income taxes before October 17 and haven’t yet received a rebate, check last year’s SC income tax return and see if you have an amount on line 10. If you don’t, you don’t have a liability and are not eligible for the rebate. If you have a tax liability, check the status of your rebate online at dor.sc.gov/rebate-2022. You will need your Social Security Number and the amount from line 10 on last year’s SC tax return. If the online tool shows the rebate was issued, allow 30 days after the issue date, and then complete and submit the form SC3911, Individual Income Tax Refund Tracer. If you have not received your rebate check due to a change in address, be sure to complete and submit the SC8822I Change of Address for Individuals form. For individual questions that can’t be answered online, you can call the dedicated rebate phone line at 803-722-1958.
