Tax-Free Weekend Arrives This Week in South Carolina

Daniel Prince

Shoppers bought $24.5 million in tax-free goods last year

This weekend marks the state’s annual 72-hour sales tax holiday. From Friday through Sunday, computers, clothes, school supplies, and many other items can be purchased without sales tax. The South Carolina Department of Revenue reminds shoppers that eligible items can be bought in-store and online without paying the state’s 6% sales tax and any applicable local taxes during the weekend.

Tax-free items include computers, printers, school supplies, clothing and accessories, shoes, and certain bed and bath items. Not every item is tax-free, however. Things like digital cameras, smartphones, jewelry, cosmetics, eyewear, wallets, watches, and furniture will still be subject to sales tax.

Last year, South Carolina shoppers bought more than $24.5 million in tax-free items during the Sales Tax Holiday. For a detailed list of tax-free items, shopping lists, and FAQs, visit dor.sc.gov/taxfreeweekend.
