Couple accused of "receipt shopping"
A Gaffney pair have been charged in shoplifting incidents dating to last May. On May 28, 2020, the loss prevention officer at Walmart talked to Cpl. Dean Allen about a female doing receipt shopping.
He stated that the female entered the store around noon on May 25, 2020. She had no items or bags with her at the time. She selected several items at the store and then went to the customer service desk to receive a refund on the items she had not paid for. The items totaled $166.50. The officer told Allen the woman had a receipt on her phone, and that she had come into the store ahead of a male who had been picking up receipts in the parking lot. They scanned the receipts to their Walmart phone app to make it look like they had purchased the items. She then exited the store with some of the items still in her cart, none of which she had paid for. The officer stated she got into the same vehicle as the man who had been picking up receipts and who did something similar just minutes earlier.
On May 25, a white male entered the store with a receipt the officer had observed the male pick up in the parking lot. The man selected several items from the store and put them into his cart, which he then took to the customer service desk and received a refund on the items for which he had not paid.
The woman was identified as 46-year-old Debra Elaine Gray of Gaffney. She is charged with shoplifting and obtaining money or property under false pretense. The man was identified as 52-year-old Shannon Rae Gray of Gaffney. He is charged with obtaining money or property under false pretense. The pair were arrested last Friday.
