Rural Health and Nutrition, Livestock agents serving Union County

Union County Clemson Extension has gotten an infusion of fresh blood recently, as a new rural health and nutrition agent and an area livestock agent have come to Union. Julia Newsome is the Rural Health and Nutrition Agent for Union and Cherokee counties. She is a native of Upstate New York who moved to South Carolina last June. She joined the Clemson Extension team last November.

Two programs she is working on are the “Know Diabetes by Heart” and “Health Extension for Diabetes.” Know Diabetes by Heart is sponsored by the American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association. It is a free education session offered both in-person and online. It aims to help participants better understand the link between diabetes and heart disease. It is a one-hour session where you will learn the risks related to diabetes and heart disease, how to take control of your risks, and learn about community and clinical resources.

The Health Extension for Diabetes program is considered a practice-tested diabetes support program. Its main goal is to help participants better manage diabetes to prevent or delay complications. It is a four-month program that includes eight educational sessions and intermittent support sessions, each designed to help participants learn more about diabetes and provide them with necessary skills and support to successfully self-manage their condition. For more information, call Julia at 424-8275.

Chris LeMaster is the new Area Livestock Agent assigned to Union County. He has served Cherokee, Spartanburg, and York counties since 2014, and he says he looks forward to meeting the farmers of Union County and serving the livestock and forage producers here.
