Union County Public Transportation to Begin Service Next Week

Daniel Prince

Three-year pilot program aims to take people to appointments, shopping, work, and school

Union County Public Transportation provided by the Chester Connector will begin service on Monday, January 16. County Council voted a few months back to authorize a three-year pilot program to provide the service in the county. The goal of the program is to enhance the quality of life for residents through the use of a safe and efficient public transportation system. The system will operate Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for holidays. Approved trips include medical appointments, grocery stores, shopping, pharmacy visits, banks, work, and school. The service area, at least initially, is within a 5-mile radius of the Union County Courthouse. They plan to provide additional options for residents of Carlisle, Jonesville, and Lockhart, based on three round-trip requests per day. Fares will be $1 per trip or $2 round trip per passenger, collected when boarding the vehicle. Reservations require a 48-hour notice. To request a ride, call 864-762-7972. WBCU News will interview Kathy Jo Lancaster, County Director of Community Development and Special Projects, and Jennifer Davis, Executive Director of The Chester Connector, Wednesday morning in the 9 a.m. hour to talk more about the public transportation program.
