A Union woman has died in a house fire. The fire was reported at around 8:24 a.m. The Union County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a structure fire at 122 Pinewood Acres in Union County. When deputies arrived on the scene, they were told two people and several animals had escaped, but a female was still inside the residence. Deputies and fire personnel made multiple attempts to rescue the woman but were unsuccessful.

After firefighters extinguished the fire, a deceased female was found in a bedroom of the home. The Union County Coroner’s Office was notified by dispatch at around 8:45 a.m. to respond to the scene. The woman was identified as 71-year-old Martha McKinnon. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday at Newberry Pathology Group.

Investigators went to the scene along with the SLED Arson Unit and the State Fire Marshal’s Office and executed a search warrant. The cause of the fire was ruled accidental, but the investigation is continuing by the Union County Sheriff’s Office, SLED, and the Union County Coroner’s Office.
