Council sets committees for coming year
At Tuesday’s Union County Council meeting, Finance Director Ann Boggs was recognized for five years of service to the county. Nathaniel Dogan, Jr. was honored for 10 years with the recycling program, and Thomas Crocker was recognized for 15 years with recycling. Hannah Jarrett, Vice President of Community and Collective Impact with United Way of the Piedmont gave council members an update on the Community Resource Coordinator program. The program began in 2017 and exists to help connect families to existing resources through the community and United Way network. They come alongside the family and work with them long-term on things like financial literacy, money management, and helping them achieve goals and become more self-sufficient. Jarrett introduced council to Lakenya Young, who is the full-time Community Resource Coordinator for Union County. Young is a native of the county and works from the library to assist families in the county who need the United Way’s services. Jarrett also reminded council about 211, a phone number that is set aside as a free information referral line. It provides information about and referral to health and human service resources in South Carolina. She also reminded council about the United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, with trained volunteers preparing taxes for free for citizens who qualify. The work is done by appointment, by calling 211 or toll-free, 1-866-892-9211.
In other news from the meeting, the appointments to the county’s standing committees were unanimously approved.
