Fire damages surrounding homes, as well

An unoccupied house on Fairmont Street in the Monarch community was destroyed by fire Wednesday night. The fire was reported at around 8:30 p.m. Several surrounding homes also reportedly suffered damage from the blaze. There is no word yet on the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation. No injuries were reported. The house fire was unrelated to the smoke that Union County residents may have noticed around the county Wednesday. The SC Forestry Commission was conducting a controlled burn in a portion of the Sumter National Forest Wednesday.
