Clemson leads the state; MIT leads the nation

The personal-finance website WalletHub released its 2022 Best College and University Rankings report, comparing over 1000 higher-education institutions in the US. They based their rankings on 30 key measures grouped into seven categories, which are student selectivity, cost and financing, faculty resources, campus safety, campus experience, education outcomes, and career outcomes. The top 10 colleges and universities in South Carolina, according to WalletHub’s rankings, are Clemson University, Wofford College, Furman University, University of South Carolina-Columbia, Columbia International University, Charleston Southern University, Southern Wesleyan University, Presbyterian College, Citadel Military College of South Carolina, and North Greenville University.

According to WalletHub, Clemson scored slightly better than average in admission rate. They scored among the worst in net cost and student-faculty ratio. They were among the best for low on-campus crime rates. They were worse than average in gender and racial diversity. They had the best graduation rate and 2nd-best post-attendance median salary.

Wofford College had the 2nd best admission rate and student-faculty ratio and 3rd best graduation rate and post-attendance median salary. They were near the bottom in net cost, and a little worse than average for on-campus crime and gender and racial diversity.

Comparing South Carolina and Clemson, Clemson had better scores in student selectivity, campus safety, campus experience, education outcomes, and career outcomes. USC had better scores in cost and financing and faculty resources. Among the top South Carolina schools, Clemson had the best scores for both student selectivity and education outcomes. Charleston Southern was best in cost and financing. Presbyterian College led the way in faculty resources. Columbia International University had the best score for campus safety. The Citadel led the state in both campus experience and career outcomes.
Compared nationally, WalletHub ranks Clemson 123rd and Wofford 124th. Furman comes in 175th, and USC is 197th. Clemson and Wofford do come in 24th and 25th for the best schools in the south, with Furman and South Carolina both making the top 50.

Who are WalletHub’s top schools in the nation? MIT, Princeton, California Institute of Technology, Harvard, and Yale are the top 5, followed by Rice, Northwestern, Duke, Stanford, and Johns Hopkins University.
