West Virginia Woman Falls Victim to Rental Scam

Daniel Prince

She lost $2100 before realizing it was a scam

A West Virginia woman staying with a friend in Union fell victim to a rental scam on Facebook. The woman came to Union Public Safety Headquarters and stated she had found a house to rent in Spartanburg via Facebook Marketplace. She contacted the person who listed it on Facebook, completed a rental application form, and was advised that she was accepted. The woman sent $500 twice via Cashapp on March 1. She contacted the person the next day to request the keys to the house, and the person told her she needed to send $1100 more. She sent the money in two different transactions on Cashapp, one for $600 and the other for $500. She said she went to the house and realized she had been scammed. She went first to report the incident to the Spartanburg Police Department. They referred her to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office. She said they referred her back to the Union Public Safety Department, since she was staying in Union. The woman emailed a screen shot of the messages, and the case has been turned over to investigations.
