Car turned in front of 18-wheeler; man declared dead at the scene
A York County man was killed in a Wednesday morning crash in Union County. According to Master Trooper Brandon Bolt with the SC Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 6:25 a.m. on SC Hwy. 9 near Kelly Road. A 1995 Mercury Grand Marquis, driven by a man the Union County Coroner’s Office identified as 61-year-old Kenny Bernard Alexander of McConnells, and a 2003 Volvo 18-wheeler, driven by a Whitmire man, were involved in the wreck. Alexander was traveling north on Highway 9 while the 18-wheeler was traveling south. Alexander attempted to make a left turn but failed to yield the right of way and was struck by the tractor-trailer. Both vehicles then traveled off the road, striking a sign, a gas line, a utility pole, and a fence. Alexander was declared dead at the scene, while the truck driver was uninjured. The wreck is under investigation by the SC Highway Patrol. According to the Union County Coroner’s Office, an autopsy on Alexander will be performed at Newberry Pathology on Friday morning.
